We had these CEOs and leaders from the Twin Cities and surrounding areas join us this summer! Each one as a guest speaker in-kind stopped by jEM to speak of own entrepreneurial and leadership stories and provide advice to you.

 

Robert Marsh

Robert Marsh is the CEO of Synico Staffing a multi-state temporary and permanent staffing agency based in Golden Valley. Under Mr. Marsh’s leadership Synico has grown to employ a staff of over 1000, operating in 23 states. Synico also lays claim to being one of the largest minority owned staffing agencies in the country. Aside from his impressive entrepreneurial resume, Marsh is a generous philanthropist. He and his brother Jerry have been the primary sponsors of the Junior Entrepreneurs of Minnesota program since 2010. This is Mr. Marsh’s fifth time joining jEM.

 

Amy Langer

Amy Langer is Co-Founder and Managing Partner of Sálo, Oberon and NumberWorks, three outcomes driven and award winning talent resource companies. The firms are among the fastest-growing contract staffing companies in the country and top performers in the Minneapolis-St. Paul area. In 2012, for the fourth year in a row, Sálo was named a “Best Place to Work” by Minneapolis/St. Paul Business Journal. Sálo has also been recognized by the Business Journal as a “Fast 50 Private Company,” a four time “Healthiest Employer of the Twin Cities,” “Top 25 Women-Owned Business” and “Top 25 Management Consulting Firms,” demonstrating outcomes and talent alignment are important to her business model too. Sálo was also ranked as the “Fastest Growing Women-Led Business in North America” by Entrepreneur Magazine and the Women President’s Organization.

Amy is active in both the Women Presidents' Organization (WPO) and Women Corporate Directors (WCD). She serves on the Washburn Center for Children Capital Campaign Committee as well as the Lake Country School Board. Amy earned her Bachelor of Science in Accounting from Michigan State University in 1994 and a CPA designation in 1996. She is a member of the 2011 class of Henry Crown Fellows at the Aspen Institute.

 

Lee Wallace

Lee Wallace is the Queen Bean of Peace Coffee, a mission-driven coffee company based in Minneapolis. Founded in 1996 by the Institute for Agriculture and Trade Policy, Peace Coffee works for economic justice for farmers around the world and consciously works to promote healthy local economies and sustainable business practices.

Named one of Minneapolis’ 40 Under 40 in 2012, Lee speaks frequently about fair trade, ethical business and the realities of weaving together a successful organization. Prior to fair trade coffee, Lee’s professional experiences include work on social entrepreneurship, rural economic development, small business incubation, and natural foods. In her spare time, Lee is a voracious reader, avid gardener, dedicated hockey player and human companion to a number of rescued animals.

 

Roger Schelper

After graduating from the University of Minnesota, Roger Schelper co-founded Davanni’s, a New York-style pizzeria. Today, he is a successful serial entrepreneur and oversees more than 20 Davanni’s locations throughout the Twin Cities. This is Mr. Schelper’s third visit to the jEM Summer Camp.

 

Frances Woodson

Owner, Forward Motion Management Consulting. This is Ms. Woodson’s first visit to the jEM Summer Camp.

 

Juan Ramirez

Juan "The Cookie Man" Ramirez is the CEO of Grupo Avance and Marcelita's Cookies. Through his work with Grupo Avance, Mr. Ramirez brings his vast international consulting experience to multinational conglomerates to increase their presence in Latin markets. However, his passion lies in Marcelita’s Cookies, through which he and his wife create delicious gourmet Hispanic treats. This is Mr. Ramirez’s third year with the jEM Summer Camp.

 

Rebecca Bergner & Alexandra Campion

Rebecca graduated from the Carlson School of Management at the University of Minnesota with a degree in finance and communications, where she joined Alpha Kappa Psi Fraternity. Since graduation, Rebecca has worked at Deloitte Consulting and is currently at Target Corporation as a manager in organizational effectiveness. Rebecca recently completed her masters in human resources and serves on the board of directors for the Center for Girls Leadership. She is also an advisor for Beta Theta Pi Fraternity.

Alexandra graduated from the University of South Carolina with a degree in public relations, where she joined Kappa Kappa Gamma. After graduation, she traveled as a leadership consultant for Kappa before enrolling at the University of St. Thomas School of Law in Minneapolis. Alexandra is currently admitted to the Minnesota Bar and serves as the executive director of the Center for Girls' Leadership. She is also an advisor for Kappa Kappa Gamma.

Alan Fine

Alan Fine is a faculty member at the Carlson School of Management in the department of Strategic Management and Entrepreneurship since 1995. He was a founder of the Undergraduate Entrepreneurship Program and served as its first director, and has won several teaching awards. He holds an MBA from the Carlson School of Management and a BA in Economics from the University of Minnesota. Fine has also held certifications in public accounting and securities. Fine is an entrepreneur, and has been chief financial officer of a manufacturing company, an investment banker, a public accountant and a management consultant. Fine is also a published author.

 

Instructors

Diane Paterson

Diane Paterson is the Senior Business Consultant for the University of Minnesota’s Office for Business & Community Economic Development. A resource in the economic development and small business industry, Ms. Paterson is a regional expert on women’s economics and women in business, speaking to and educating audiences statewide. She’s been a panelist at St. Mary’s University and taught seminars and classes at the University of St. Catherine’s, Anoka County Technical College, Rasmussen School of Business, as well as at local chambers of commerce and the Small Business Administration. At the International Interpreters Association, the Hmong National Conference and United Way, she has been the voice of – and the voice to – women in business.

 

Noah Reetz

Noah Reetz is Student Program Coordinator in the Office for Student Engagement, University of Minnesota. In the fall Noah will start his senior year of college while studying Communication Theory. Noah is originally from Sheboygan, Wisconsin, and was a part of the swim team in high school. During his time at the University of Minnesota Noah has worked at the Minnesota Daily, Orientation and First-Year Programs, has served on the Student Service Fees Committee, and has been an active member in his fraternity. Currently Noah works in the Office for Student Engagement by promoting, educating about, and advancing the Strengths initiative on campus. In his free time Noah likes playing around with Rubik’s Cubes, reading, obsessing over series on Netflix, and spending time with his close friends.

 

Na'im Madyun, PhD

Associate Professor in the Department of Postsecondary Teaching and Learning, College of Education and Human Development, University of Minnesota. Born and raised in Arkansas. Graduated with a BA in psychology from Morehouse College. Received a doctorate in educational psychology from University of Minnesota. Has taught at the college level since 2001. Teaches first year experience and psychology courses. Research is on social factors that explain educational outcomes.

 

Katie Douglass

Katie Douglass attended the University of Wisconsin - Eau Claire, where she majored in music history and English. After graduating, she spent two years working in Saint Paul Public Schools as a math tutor with 8th grade students. Currently she teaches computer classes for the community at the University Research and Outreach-Engagement Center in North Minneapolis. She enjoys travel and has visited Thailand, Singapore, South Africa, France, England, and Bali.

 

Sheena O’Malley

Sheena O’Malley is Marketing & Communications Specialist for the University of Minnesota’s Office for Business & Community Economic Development. She intends to leverage her past work experience, undergrad and MBA experience to secure a marketing position to utilize her creativity, leadership, and communication skills, while continuously being challenged. She has worked as a MBA Marketing Advisor at University of Minnesota Growth Accelerator Program (GAP) and as a Marketing Intern at The Commons Hotel. Graduated from University of Wisconsin-Madison with B.S. Currently enrolled in the Master of Business Administration (M.B.A.), Marketing program at University of St. Thomas.

 

Seth Werner

Seth Werner is a Sr. Lecturer in the Marketing Department at the Carlson School of Management at the University of Minnesota, USA and has lectured at the China Europe International Business School (CEIBS) in Shanghai, China. For the past nine years he has been teaching primarily Marketing Research and Pricing Strategy in undergraduate and MBA levels. In addition to his teaching on-campus he has led two MBA programs and six undergraduate study abroad programs to China, as well as two undergraduate programs to Dubai, UAE.

Prior to working at the University of Minnesota, Seth worked as a Marketing Research Supervisor at Gatorade – a consumer packaged goods (fast moving consumer goods) firm that is the leader in the sports drink category in the U.S. market. In addition to his experience with large firms, Seth has also worked at smaller, privately held firms. These smaller firms included Callahan and Associates, a Credit Union consulting firm specializing in products and services in the financial services sector and TSBR, Inc. which worked with independent entrepreneurs to bring their products to market.

Seth earned his BBA in Marketing from The George Washington University in Washington DC. His MS is from the AC Nielsen Center for Marketing Research at the University of Wisconsin School of Business in Madison, WI and his PhD at the University of Minnesota in the department of Organizational Leadership, Policy and Development where his research focused on return migration of Chinese nationals.

In 2010/2011 he spent nine months in China where he was conducting field research in Kunming, Yunnan, China.

 

John Stavig

John Stavig directs the activities within the Holmes Center for Entrepreneurship and is primarily responsible for leading the outreach activities and implementation of new curriculum. He holds a bachelor's degree from the Carlson School and an MBA from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. John's professional background is in management consulting, private equity, and the communications industry. As a founding principal of a $100 million private equity fund, he sourced and managed investments in numerous early-stage communications firms. John also served as CEO, CFO and board member for several start-up and early-stage technology firms. As a Principal at Gemini Consulting and Arthur Andersen, he provided strategic and financial consulting services to senior executives in Fortune 1000 firms in the United States, Europe, Asia and South Africa. In his role at the Holmes Center, John works with hundreds of students and alumni entrepreneurs to develop their business ideas.

 

Steve Spruth

Steve Spruth is a Senior Lecturer at the Carlson School of Management, University of Minnesota, with a BA in Biology from Brown University and a Masters in Public and Private Management from the Yale School of Management. His academic interests include entrepreneurship, innovation, globalization, social entrepreneurship and sustainability. He currently brings University of Minnesota undergraduates to China each May to study entrepreneurship, and to Brazil each January to study sustainability. His international experience includes study and teaching in Brazil, China, Spain and Venezuela. His consulting clients include Medtronic, UnitedHealth Group, Select Comfort and Behavioral Health Services. He is on the Advisory Board of The Brown School of Social Work at Washington University St Louis. His industry experience includes executive positions at UnitedHealth Group, Long Term Care Group, and Peak Health Care.

 

Nick Schicker

Nick Schicker is a Project Manager at BCED for Goods & Services. He helps minority vendors navigate the challenging purchasing process at the U of M. Nick has experience at the corporate, nonprofit, and small business levels. He received his JD from Hamline School of Law and studied for his MBA at the Hamline School of Business. Nick also studied in Norway regarding Transnational Business in the European Union, Norwegian Law, and International Negotiation.

 

Student Facilitators / Instructors

Immanuel Jones

Immanuel Jones will be a sophomore this fall at Minneapolis Community and Technical College (MCTC) where he is studying Business Management and Liberal Arts with a focus in biology and plant life. Currently he serves as the Director of Sustainability for the MCTC campus, in addition to a variety of boards as a chair of these of perspective committees. He is involved in these things to help himself prepare for the future and his major of choice. While a junior high school he owned and operated a 501 (c) 3 called Eco-City Minnesota (short for "Economical City Minnesota"). This venture fed over 100 individuals in its first year and made the gardening tour, partnering with several colleges and local/international business and much more. In the future Immanuel plans on majoring in Agricultural and Food Business Management at the University of Minnesota College of Food, Agricultural and Natural Resources.

 

Percy Chism

Percy attends Auburn University, where he is studying Business Management and Agribusiness. Percy is also involved in various organizations around campus including Alpha Kappa Psi, which is a coed business fraternity, and the Auburn University Society of Human Resource Management, a group that focuses on human resources. Percy is also a member of St. James AME Church, where he serves as a Junior Trustee, is involved in the Griot Leadership Project as a mentor, and is a College Scholar. Percy plans to one day become an entrepreneur and run his own green business, which caters to both local and international markets. It is important to him to be able to provide products and services of value that will help improve the community and world at large.

 

Volunteer Facilitator, Oak Park Center

Jeremiah Carter

Jeremiah attends Minneapolis Community Technology College. He is in the process of starting his own community development center to teach youth and adults, so that they know how to contribute to and recognize and analyze issues in their communities in helping build better communities. His achievements are giving ideas to youth and helping youth recognize peace-centered approaches and their passions for their better futures. Volunteering for coaching at four different recreation centers with and for youth, and helping adults in homeless situations. Facilitating sessions with victims and their parents to evaluate their situations from past crimes in improving their quality of lives.

Hugh Cooper

HUGH COOPER is the founder and owner of “I’VE BEEN FRAMED” ART GALLERY AND FRAMING an innovative art gallery that specializes in the sales of culturally diverse art and artifacts. Many of the pieces of art that Mr. Cooper procures are from countries that he has traveled. He has spent many hours learning from the indigenous people their techniques of creating beautiful art. This is Mr. Cooper’s first year working with jEM.

Mark Rodriguez

Mark Rodriguez is the President of 3rd Lair Skate Park in Golden Valley. 3rd Lair is Minnesota’s premier SkatePark and Shop since 1997. Mark joined the business in an entry-level role teaching and assisting in the expansion of the business. After a few year Mark put on his entrepreneurial hat on to help grow the business’ competition, education and camp efforts. The owners recognized his hard work and promoted him to Vice President, as well as offering him an equity position in the company. Mark is fervent supporter of youth outreach; this will be his third year with the jEM Summer Camp.

Vincent Maxey and Lindsey Gerstad are volunteers from Accenture to lead Junior Achievement Success Skills in Entrepreneurship.

Special Projects Administrator, BCED

Maki Kawase

Maki is Special Projects Administrator for the Office for Business & Community Economic Development at University of Minnesota. Currently her business entity maki consulting involves in projects with Wilson Learning Worldwide as an R & D Instructional Designer and an agent for food producers from Japan. For the past eight years, she has worked for the University of Minnesota Extension Urban 4-H Youth Development Office as various roles, in addition to, as an Assistant Extension Professor to co-lead 4-H programs in Hennepin and Ramsey Counties, Minnesota. She holds a PhD in the Work, Community, and Family Education program from the University of Minnesota. Her academic interests are youth development studies and interpretive modes of inquiry, focusing on how young people craft their worlds and understand the meanings of their worlds. Maki’s published dissertation is available from VDM Verlag Dr. Müller: Crafting Selves in Multiple Worlds: A Phenomenological Study of Four Foreign-born Women's Lived-experiences of Being "Foreign(ers)."
