The University of Minnesota provides hundreds of thousands of work hours to Minnesota residents in the construction industry annually, there is enormous opportunity for the University to profoundly impact communities. Moreover, because of our area growth patterns, we are seeing significant employment opportunities on University of Minnesota projects by area residents.

Construction employment exists in two forms at the University: outsourcing on new and renovation projects and in-house maintenance/facility. Providing these types of job opportunities for underrepresented groups will not only benefit participating individuals and their communities, but will further the mission of the University of Minnesota as a Land Grant institution.

Accessing Professional Opportunities

BCED works with contractors on University projects to identify workforce goals and project needs. Pre-screened workers are then referred to contractors to fill available apprenticeship positions. Once hired, workers are sponsored in to unions and earn union wages and benefits.

Partnerships & Recruitment

Our partnerships with community based organizations (CBOs), government agencies, and union workers for job placement. Current partnerships include:

  • Summit Academy OIC
  • Minneapolis Urban League
  • Construction Partnering Program

Developing Job Knowledge and Skills from a Mentor

The Mentoring Initiative is designed to match entry level workers with experienced craftsmen, who will foster their success on the job. Once placed in employment, eligible participants will be matched with mentors as mentors are available.
