Expectations for Student Conduct

Rationale and Scope for Expectations

The role of the Disability Resource Center (DRC) is to determine and implement reasonable accommodations for University students with disabilities. This work requires balancing the student’s need for access with the University’s need to maintain academic integrity.  While, the DRC understands that DRC staff must adhere to the Board of Regents Code of Conduct, these department regulations are geared toward the role of students in working with the DRC.

DRC Expectations for Student Conduct

Students must be respectful in their interactions with each other and with DRC staff. This includes interactions with the front desk, testing, document conversion, computer accommodations, interpreters and captioners, access assistants, access consultants, and other staff. Similarly, the DRC staff must be respectful in their interactions with each other and with students using the DRC.

The DRC holds these expectations for student conduct:

  1. Respectful interactions

    • Interactions must be civil and respectful in tone (e.g., no raised voices, shouting), content (e.g., no vulgar language, profanities, name-calling) and demeanor (e.g., no threatening gestures).
    • Language must be appropriate for a professional setting.
    • Interactions must be free from harassment, discrimination, threats, or violence.
    • Students must not be disruptive to other students or staff in the lobby, testing areas, or offices.
  2. Following processes

Large numbers of students use the DRC, and each student’s access needs are important. Students must be respectful of the processes and procedures that are put in place to ensure timely and appropriate service for all constituents. 

The DRC expects students to follow these processes:

  • To ensure continuity of service, students will work with their access consultant, rather than make excessive use of drop-in. 
  • When students have concerns about working with their access consultant, they will make an appointment to discuss their concerns with the Associate Director, rather than make excessive use of drop-in.
  • When students have concerns about services provided by the DRC, they will follow the Grievance Process outlined on our website: https://diversity.umn.edu/disability/grievanceprocess
  • Students are responsible for making timely access requests.  A student’s late request may result in a delay before accommodations can be implemented.
  • Students share responsibility in the process and have a role in effective and timely communication.

DRC Right to Limit Service Due to Inappropriate Conduct

Conduct that significantly interferes with the process of providing accommodations, including but not limited to what is listed below, can jeopardize a student’s ability to be served by the DRC:

  • Excessive use of drop-in meetings instead of scheduling appointments with the assigned access consultant after being asked to follow a prescribed process for scheduling meetings.
  • Excessive amount of communication (e.g., repeated e-mails and/or phone calls) on the same subjects after being asked to follow a prescribed process of communication.
  • Continued requests to meet with specific staff after being asked to follow a prescribed process for scheduling appointments.
  • Repeated communications that are disrespectful in tone, content and demeanor, after being asked to communicate respectfully.
  • Repeated interactions that are harassing, discriminating, threatening, or violent, after being asked to interact respectfully.
  • Repeated disruptive conduct that affects other students or staff in the lobby, testing areas, or offices, after being asked to modify conduct.
  • Repeated demands to control or manipulate the disability accommodation process.

Due Process for Addressing Inappropriate Conduct

If a student fails to conduct themself in a manner that is consistent with these standards, the student will be asked to meet with the access consultant, manager, or associate director to discuss the situation and to receive feedback and direction on the specific behavior(s) of concern.  Continuation of services is dependent upon the student participating in this meeting in a reasonable and timely manner, and conducting themself consistently with the DRC Expectations for Student Conduct in the future.

If the inappropriate conduct continues, services will be discontinued until the student meets with the DRC Service Delivery Committee. Thereafter, services will be resumed only after the student establishes that they are committed to abiding by the DRC Expectations for Student Conduct in the future.
