Converting books and print documents to alternate formats takes time — about 25-40 hours to convert the average textbook. The typical process is as follows:


Interpreting and Captioning Unit

Welcome to the Interpreting/Captioning Unit (ICU) of the Disability Resource Center.  We provide communication access to DeafBlind, Deaf, and hard of hearing individuals in the University community.  We are a full-time staff of professionals who are committed to providing high quality sign language interpreting, real-time captioning, and media captioning services to students, staff, faculty, and guests of the University.

Student Access

The Disability Resource Center provides confidential support to University of Minnesota-Twin Cities students.  Our goal is to collaborate with students, instructors, and staff to remove or reduce barriers in order to provide equitable access to students with disabilities.

Education & Training

The Disability Resource Center offers a variety of resources including: Education/training, consultation, technical assistance, and career information.  

To request a training, outreach, or technical assistance/consultation, please complete and submit our Request for DRC Outreach and Training Form. Someone from our office will contact you about your request within approximately 10 days.

Accommodations and Services

The Disability Resource Center promotes access and equity for all students, faculty, staff and guests of the University of Minnesota. Accommodation units assist in implementing accommodations approved by access consultants in Student Access and UReturn access consultants. They also collaborate and consult with colleges, departments and units to create accessible learning and working environments. The University is committed to advancing access for everyone.
