James Schwartz - Outreach Coordinator
This is my senior year and fourth year working at the Center! I serve as the Outreach Coordinator here at the GSC, so you may see me around campus (don't be afraid to say hello). As a part of my duties and responsibilities at the Center, I work with the Sexuality and Gender Ambassadors, and help organize various outreach events. When I'm not working at the Center I am over on the St. Paul campus where I study Forest and Natural Resource Management with an emphasis in Parks and Protected Areas Management. This is a glorified way of saying that I really love the environment and being outside, hiking, visiting parks, biking, hiking, ect. If you're another STEM queer/trans student, come stop by and chat with me!
Saumya Arora - Student Education and Tongues Untied Coordinator
My name is Saumya Arora and I am a junior majoring in Psychology. Here at the GSC, I work with Tongues Untied, which is a group for queer people of color. In my free time, I love binge-watching movies and TV shows and finding hidden gems on Netflix. I also enjoy experimenting with makeup–I'm really into beauty techniques and bright colors are my favorite! I'm happy to be here and I can’t wait to make more memories during my time here. P.S. If I could be anything, I’d be a velociraptor.
Claire Erickson - Social Media & Web Coordinator
My name is Claire Erickson and I am a senior here at the University of Minnesota studying English Education, Leadership, and Communications. After graduation, I plan to continue studying Education at the U in the Masters program. This is my second year with the GSC and I am so excited to be back again! I work with our Social Media & Web Coordination in the office, so that means I am focused on promoting our social media, website, and other web engagements. When I am not at the Center, I love to do things like try new restaurants, hang out with my friends, or read.
Peiying Shi - International Student Outreach Coordinator
Hi I am Peiying! I am from China and a current master student at the U. I finished my undergraduate with psychology and sociology here and now major in Counseling and Student Personnel Psychology. I am working on International Student Outreach at our center. I am more a home person and enjoy cooking, reading, and watching documentaries about dogs and cats. Occasionally I will hang out to take photos of the city. Love the people here, love the gardens and lakes here, love everything and everyday here, except the half-year long winter.
Sameera Akella - Assistant Project Coordinator
My name is Sameera Akella and I'm a junior majoring in Sociology here at the University of Minnesota. This is my third year working as the Assistant Project Coordinator for the Gender and Sexuality Center for Queer and Trans Life! My job title is self explanatory, because I assist any sort of event and project planning, as well as any operational work. If I'm not working at the center, I love trying new food with friends, being outdoors, and listening to music. I enjoy getting to know new people, so feel free to stop by and chat with me!
Lars Mackenzie - Steven J. Schochet Endowment Associate
I am a PhD candidate in Feminist Studies and I work as the Schochet Endowment Associate at the GSC. My research investigates how transgender people are framed through the logics of fraud and authenticity by the state, the private sector and in our social worlds. I earned by M.A. in Feminist Studies in 2015. I moved to Minnesota from Massachusetts by way of Texas for graduate school in 2012. Before starting graduate school, I worked for a youth-oriented domestic violence advocacy non-profit. In my free time, I love to hike with my dog, cook, and play Pandemic Legacy.
