LEAD Program

The Leadership, Engagement, and Development (LEAD) Program will develop and increase the leadership capacity of University students, staff, faculty and alumni.  The yearlong program will develop leadership through mentoring, personal assessment and reflection, educational programming, targeted skill-building through group work, and community building.  The LEAD Program frames leadership development around understanding ourselves, our communities, and our work in the larger context of equity and diversity.

Schedule:

In FY17, the LEAD Program will run from September 2016 - September 2017.  As the third tier of the Equity and Diversity Certificate Program, LEAD participants are required to have completed the Basic Equity and Diversity Certificate by the start of the program. All participants must be able to attend the key LEAD events on the following dates (to be held on the East Bank, location TBD):

  • Tuesday, September 27, 2016, 1:00 – 4:00 pm - LEAD Program Kick-off - (Ski-U-Mah Room, McNamara Alumni Center)
  • Tuesday, October 11, 2016, 12:00 – 4:00 pm - Workshop 1:  Emotional Intelligence 
  • Tuesday, October 25, 2016, 2:00 – 4:00 pm - Discussion Session 1
  • Tuesday, November 15, 2016, 1:00 – 4:00 pm - Workshop 2:  Design Thinking
  • Tuesday, December 6, 2016, 1:00 – 4:00 pm - Workshop 3:  Self Care 
  • Tuesday, January 24, 2017, 1:00 – 3:00 pm - Discussion Session 2
  • Tuesday, February 21, 2017, 1:00 am – 4:00 pm - Workshop 4:  Success Signals:  Managing Communication & Conflict
  • Tuesday, March 21, 2017, 1:00 – 3:00 pm - Discussion Session 3
  • Tuesday, April 18, 2017, 1:00 – 4:00 pm - Workshop 5:  Collaboration and Evaluation
  • Tuesday, May 16, 2017, 1:00 – 4:00 pm  - Workshop 6:  Visionary Leadership
  • Tuesday, June 13, 2017, 12:00 pm – 3:00 pm - Lunch Check-in
  • Tuesday, September 12, 2017, 1:00 – 4:00 pm - LEAD Program Graduation

LEAD Program Components include:

  • A personal EQ (emotional intelligence) assessment coordinated with Lisa Griebel of Crescendo, Inc.
  • Opportunities for written and verbal reflection
  • 6 workshops designed specifically for the LEAD Program, with presenters from OED and other U of M units
  • 3 discussion sessions & a check-in lunch with LEAD facilitators Anitra Cottledge and Anne Phibbs
  • Discussion Pairs, which meet throughout the program
  • Work Groups, which design an equity and diversity-related project while working with 2 OED mentors
  • Informal access to LEAD Program facilitators, mentors, and presenters
  • LEAD Kick-off and LEAD Graduation

Space in the LEAD Program is limited.  The deadline to apply for the LEAD Program is 4:30 PM, June 17, 2016. Participants will be notified of acceptance on June 30, 2016.
