MCAE Celebration of Achievement

This annual ceremony honors all multicultural undergraduate, graduate, and professional students.  Each student who attends receives a handmade, custom designed, stole created only for our students.





Dear Graduating Students:

Congratulations on your pending graduation! 

This year COA will be held in Ted Man Concert Hall on Saturday, May 5th 2018 @ 1 PM.

The Celebration of Achievement registration has official reached its capacity.

For students who want to register for Celebration of Achievement (COA)

If you are a graduating student looking to register for Celebration of Achievement, registration is now closed. We can add you to our waiting list, by contacting the MCAE front desk. Seating and available stoles are limited.

For students who want a stole early/prior to COA

Unfortunately, the only way to guarantee a free stole to students, regardless of registration status, is if they walk the stage at the event. The remaining stoles will go on sale at MCAE Monday May 7th, on a first come, first served basis only.

Road Construction

MNDOT is going to close I-94 in both directions between I-394 and I-35W for the first 3 weekends in May. This may affect your travel time to and from the event. Here is a link to the MN DOT website:

Greetings Celebration of Achievement Students!!


Thank you for registering for the 14th Annual MCAE Celebration of Achievement on Saturday May 5th 2017.

The program will feature a speakers, closing entertainment, the presentation of the MCAE stole to graduates, and a group photo to follow. Please pay attention to ALL of the details below, especially your arrival time and be sure to plan ahead. This email is long but contains all pertinent information for the important and joyous occasion for you and your guests to know.

Check-in location:





  • Seating is not guaranteed for family and friends as space is limited and is on a first come, first served basis. Please make sure your family and friends are aware of this prior to travel. It will be available online as an option for those who prefer.

  • Standing room only will be granted in the lobby until space fills, at which point guests will be directed to our overflow space.

  • Does your family or friend need accessibility seating? Complete this form by May 4th.



  • Please arrive at 11:00am-12:00pm (noon)

  • Please note that registration will close promptly at 12:05 pm. Once the program begins, late arrivals will be taken on a case-by-case basis depending on where we are in the program.

  • Access to the lobby for your guests / family / friends starts at 11:45pm and entry into the auditorium starts at 11:50pm.

Dress Code:

  • This is a FORMAL event. Please dress accordingly.  

  • Traditional / ethnic / cultural attire is highly encouraged.

  • Your cap and gown is not required, but if this is your only chance to walk in a ceremony celebrating your graduation, please feel free to wear them.

  • Please refrain from wearing jeans, t-shirts, sweatpants, sneakers, or the like. We want you to be comfortable, but not feel out of place.



  • Please do not bring personal belongings to check-in as there will be no place to securely store them. Leave them with family or friends for safekeeping.  

  • Once you line up for the ceremony the prep/holding rooms are emptied and closed so you must bring everything with you!





Question: Will I receive a confirmation email once I’ve registered for COA?

Answer: No, there is not a confirmation email upon the completion of the RSVP form. You will receive more information via email closer to the date of the event.


Question: Can we reserve or purchase a stole following the event?

Answer: After the event, a stole may be purchased however, when they're gone, they're gone.


Question: How much are stoles for purchase?

Answer: They are sold at our bulk cost of $20.00 (cash only) and will be available at the front desk of MCAE.


Question: Can I purchase more than one stole? Can I purchase extra for a friend or family member?

Answer: No. Only one stole per student. No one may purchase a second stole for a friend. You must sign in to receive your own stole.


Question: Can you or someone in MCAE mail a stole to me? Answer: No, we do not mail stoles for any reason.

Directions for FAMILY members:

FAMILIES:  Be sure to look up directions, and leave early to allow plenty of time for your arrival.  Doors open 30 minutes before the event. Because of campus construction projects and light rail, some roads may have changes since your last visit to campus.  Please plan accordingly.


Updated directions to Ted Mann:

From River Road:  take River Road to 4th Street South. Follow 4th Street South to 21st Ave S. Turn left on 21st and then immediately right into the 21st Avenue Parking Ramp to park.

From the east:  Take I94 westbound and take the Cedar Ave exit. Turn right on Cedar then right on 3rd Street South. (3rd Street South is BEFORE you cross the Washington Avenue Bridge). Turn right on 19th and then left on 4th St. S. Turn right on 21st and then right into the 21st Avenue parking ramp to park.

From the west:  Take I94 eastbound and take the Riverside exit. At the end of the exit ramp turn right on to 25th Avenue S, then right on Franklin Avenue, then right on Cedar Avenue. Turn right on 3rd Street South. (3rd Street South is BEFORE you cross the Washington Avenue Bridge). Turn right on 19th and then left on 4th St. S. Turn right on 21st and then right into the 21st Avenue parking ramp to park.

From the north or south:  Take 35W and exit at the Washington Avenue exit. Take Washington east towards Seven Corners. Turn left on 15th Ave. S, then right on to 19th Ave S., then left on 4th Street S. Turn right on 21st and then right into the 21st Avenue Parking ramp to park.

The Multicultural Center for Academic Excellence (MCAE) develops and fosters inclusive, coherent learning for all students at the University of Minnesota through educational support programs, community engagement, and cultural activities.

We are committed to recognizing the valuable work and effort completed for all of our graduates.  
On Saturday, May 5, 2018 from 1:00-2:30pm, we will hold our annual Celebration of Achievement at Ted Mann Concert Hall on the West Bank.  We welcome you to apply for the following positions.  Undergraduate Student Speaker or Graduate Student Speaker.  This form is due Sunday, April 9th by 4:30pm.  Finalists will be notified the week of April 10th to schedule an audition of their speech.

Did you miss the event and are still interested in getting a stole??

Well, unfortunately, the only way to guarantee receiving a free MCAE Stole, regardless of your event registration status, is to walk the stage during the event.  To be fair to those who missed the event, all remaining stoles go on sale the following week at 9:00am each morning on a "first come, first served basis".  That means when they're gone, they're gone. 

*You may purchase a stole for cost ($20.00/cash) and once again to be fair, we make no exceptions. 

*One stole per student.  No one can pick up a second stole for a friend.  You must sign in to get your own stole.
