Awards & Scholarships
The Women’s Center invites nominations for the following awards, scholarships and grants which honor and support University of Minnesota women. Awards are presented annually at the Celebrating University Women event in October hosted by the Women’s Center. See our past award recipients and hear from some of our scholarship awardees here.
Your gift, whether small or large, makes a huge difference and we thank you! Gifts are accepted by the University of Minnesota Foundation and by clicking one of the following links, you can choose to give your gift directly to the Carol E. Macpherson Memorial Scholarship, the Dr. Nancy “Rusty” Barceló Scholarship, the Mullen/Spector/Truax Endowment or the Women’s Center Leadership Fund.
Please note that the Civil Service Bargaining Unit Staff Award and the Professional & Administrative Leadership Award will not be awarded for 2014-2015. For funding focused on CS/BU and P & A women, see Institutional Change Grants.
This prestigious award/lecture has been established to acknowledge and honor the scholarly accomplishments and leadership of distinguished women faculty at the University of Minnesota and to offer a forum for them to share their insights and ideas with a campus and community audience. Nomination deadline: 4:30 p.m., second Friday in March.
This award was established to honor Charlotte Striebel (1929-2014), Mathematics professor-teacher-friend-feminist-scholar-mentor, and further her own passionate work for women's equity in salary, hiring and promotion. This award recognizes contributions from faculty and staff of any gender who promote access for the common good, help undo bias and discrimination, or build capacity for diverse and equitable campus communities. Award amount: $1000. Nomination deadline: 4:30 p.m., second Friday in March.
The Mullen/Spector/Truax Women’s Leadership Award is given annually to a faculty or staff woman at the University who has made outstanding contributions to women’s leadership development. This award honors women, not only for their own leadership qualities, but also for their efforts to develop leadership within others. Nomination deadline: 4:30 p.m., second Friday in March.
The Sara Evans Faculty Woman Scholar/Leader Award recognizes women faculty at the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities who have achieved significant national and international accomplishments and honors and who contribute as leaders on campus. In addition to supporting outstanding women scholars, this award also reflects the university’s strong commitment to future leaders. Nomination deadline: 4:30 p.m., second Friday in March.
The Sharon L. Doherty Student Leadership Award is given to a University of Minnesota student who has demonstrated outstanding volunteer service concerning women's issues on campus or in the broader community. Nomination deadline: 4:30 p.m., first Friday in June.
The Carol E. Macpherson Memorial Scholarship was established in Carol’s memory to assist women who are 28-years-old and over in returning to school and completing their education at the University. (Learn more about the history of the Macpherson Scholarship.) Application deadline: 4:30 p.m., first Friday in June.
The Dr. Nancy “Rusty” Barceló Scholarship (formerly the Alumnae Society Scholarship) assists University of Minnesota women students with financial need in completing their education at the University, with a special focus on women of color, new immigrants, and first generation college students. Application deadline: 4:30 p.m., first Friday in June.
Women's Center Institutional Change Grants (formerly Special Grants) seek to support a more inclusive, diverse University community with an enhanced campus climate for women faculty, staff, and students. Institutional Change Grants are intended to foster and support increased awareness, improved understanding, and institutional change. (Includes grant funding for projects specifically focused on changing the climate for P & A and CS/BU women). Application deadline: 4:30 p.m., first Friday in June.
